The Garden is Back!
Dad planted the garden again! Dad can not keep out of the dirt. He has been working on the garden over the past few months. Mom and Dad added fertilizer at the start of winter and Dad kept the soil turned. This past weekend Dad turned the soil its final time and started raking the rows.
The garden this year is small. The lot that we are on does not allow much room for a garden. Dad has opted for two main channels and four rows per channel. There will be a climbing fence in the middle of each channel. The garden still has the sprinkler system with automatic watering. A big plus here in the desert. The sprinklers work each night after midnight to keep the evaporation down.
Mom and Dirk II helped Dad plant and we have many different seeds in the ground. The tomatoes from seed were very successful last year and we planted all from seed this time. Any place the seeds do not survive we will place tomato plants. We are planting sweet corn as a wind break along with pole beans and peas. There will be watermelon, pumpkins, radishes, squash, bell peppers and Dirk II's Rhubarb from last year.
The Rhubarb returns from the planting last year and it can be partially harvested this year. The items have been moved around in the garden to prevent disease and there are barriers to collect heavy rains. It does not rain often here, but when it does it usually comes down hard.
Stop by when you can.
